CHIRALCEL®

CHIRALCEL® Polysaccharide Chiral Stationary manufactured using spherical high quality silica support onto which the polymeric cellulose chiral selector is physically coated.

Coated Polysaccharide Columns

Daicel’s traditional coated polysaccharide columns are well recognized for their broad range of applications and remarkable loading capacity. These columns are packed with Daicel’s coated polysaccharide-based chiral stationary phases (CSPs) which are manufactured by physically coating the polysaccharide derivatives onto silica matrices. Due to this manufacturing process, a choice of mobile phase components is typically narrower than with immobilized columns in order to minimize damage to the CSPs.  However, the coated columns have a proven track record of performance and with proper care can maintain their performance over years of use.

Coated phases. The traditional coated chiral stationary phases (CSPs) from Daicel are now available in 3-micron particle size and offer superior speed and column resolving power. These columns packed with 3-micron CSP offer high-speed separations, reduction in analysis time, more samples per day and a reduction in cost per sample. 3-micron columns may be used in conventional HPLC units without significant loss in performance, even with the smaller column dimensions (3-micron chromatogram and 3-micron table).

The original Daicel CSPs were formed by coating the chiral polymer from the derivatization of cellulose on 10-micron diameter silica. Subsequently,  CHIRALCEL OD, CHIRALCEL OJ, CHIRALCEL OB, CHIRALCEL OC and CHIRALCEL OZ have now been effectively superseded by products made with higher-efficiency 5-micron particles. These CSPs are designated, OD-H, OJ-H, OB-H OC-H and OZ-H. Because these CSPs are made by coating the polymer on the silica, any solvent that will dissolve the polymer will remove the coating and damage the CSP. For this reason there are strict limits on the mobile phases that may be used and one of Daicel's priorities is to develop further the range of immobilized CSPs to eliminate these restrictions.
